Concord, NC (April 30, 2017) – Clay Millican drove the Parts Plus/Great Clips/University of Northwestern Ohio dragster to the No.1 qualifying position and a second round finish at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals.
Millican came into race day as the No.1 qualifier with an elapsed time of 3.716 at 325.77 mph. Instead of competing against one other dragster this weekend, he raced three other dragsters. This is the one time a year that NHRA runs this unique race format.
“While I enjoy the controlled chaos of the 4-Wide Nationals, it is definitely a challenge,” Millican said. “Coming into race day as No.1 qualifier we felt the odds of us winning were really good.”
In the first round Millican staged against Leah Pritchett, Shawn Langdon and Terry Haddock. Being top qualifier gave Millican lane choice and he opted for lane three. Millican and Pritchett captured the win lights with a 3.743/320.97 and 3.737/316.23.
In the second round Millican was up against Pritchett, Dom Lagana and eventual race winner, Steve Torrence. Halfway down the track Millican hazed the tires, slowing down the car to a 5.134/145.30. Pritchett and Torrence advanced to race in the final quad.
“We’re obviously disappointed. I really don’t know why we smoked the tires; our tune up was not set up for that to happen,” said Millican. “Overall it was a good weekend for us. We ran the same motor the past three days and did not hurt any parts. The car ran great with the exception of that last run.”
With the bonus points from qualifying, Millican moves up a spot in Top Fuel standings to the sixth position.
Next up for the Parts Plus/Great Clips/University of Northwestern Ohio team is the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta on May 5 – 7, 2017.
