Baytown, TX (April 23, 2017) – Clay Millican had his best finish in the 2017 season at the NHRA SpringNationals. He took the Parts Plus/Great Clips/University of Northwestern Ohio Top Fuel dragster to the semifinals.
“What a weekend for this team. We were No.1 qualifiers and we got some good qualifying bonus points. The car ran consistent all weekend,” Millican said. “The goal right now is to go out and get a win. With a semifinal finish today we’re getting a lot closer.”
Millican qualified No.1 and set a new Royal Purple Raceway track record with an elapsed time of 3.722 at 325.69 mph.
In Round One Millican defeated No.16 qualifier Steve Chrisman and set the low E.T. of eliminations with a 3.729/326.79 to Chrisman’s 9.654/83.58. In Round Two Millican defeated Tony Schumacher on a holeshot. Millican had a reaction time of .079 to Schumacher’s .085. Millican raced to a 3.784/320.97 and Schumacher went 3.779/317.34.
“That Army car is bad to the bone and everyone knows that. We earned lane choice with our first round E.T. We were able to sneak in a win with one thousandth of a second; .001. I think that’s seven inches at 300 mph. Whatever it was, it was a heck of a drag race; Really, really close,” recalled Millican.
In the semifinals Millican came up against Steve Torrence. The drivers had nearly identical reaction times: Millican .065 and Torrence .068. But the Parts Plus/Great Clips/University of Northwestern Ohio dragster lost its grip and on the track and smoked the tires. Torrence won 3.760/323.27 to Millican’s 8.621/87.00.
“Steve Torrence is my buddy. I’m a Tennessee boy and he’s Texas boy. What a drag race. We both staged so shallow we were laughing at the far end about blinking the bulbs and being so shallow,” said Millican. “Stevie put a good run down. We were a little aggressive and got the tires loose.”
With Millican collecting bonus points in qualifying he leaves the NHRA SpringNationals No. 7 position in points. Next race for the Stringer Performance team is the 2017 NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, NC on April 28 – April 29, 2017.
